Question 1

How do I book my driving test at the Roath test centre?

Accepted Answer

Book your practical driving test directly on the DVSA website at gov.uk/book-driving-test. You will need your provisional licence number and theory test pass certificate number. Tests at Roath can be booked up to 24 weeks in advance.

Question 2

How much does the driving test cost at Roath?

Accepted Answer

The DVSA practical driving test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings and weekends. This fee is paid directly to the DVSA when you book. If you fail and need to rebook, you pay the fee again.

Question 3

What should I expect on test day at Roath driving test centre?

Accepted Answer

Arrive at the Roath test centre 10–15 minutes early with your provisional licence. The test lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes an eyesight check, show me/tell me questions, and driving on local roads including independent driving. You are allowed up to 15 minor faults.

Question 4

How do I find an instructor who knows the Roath test routes?

Accepted Answer

Search by postcode on Reliant to find DVSA-approved instructors based in Roath. Local instructors know the test routes, common hazards, and the roads the examiner is likely to use — giving you a significant advantage on test day.

Question 5

What are the most common reasons for failing the driving test in Roath?

Accepted Answer

The most common serious faults at DVSA test centres include: not checking mirrors effectively, incorrect positioning at junctions, hesitation at roundabouts, poor observation at crossroads, and not responding correctly to traffic lights. Your instructor in Roath will know the specific hazards on local test routes.

Question 6

How long is the waiting time for a driving test in Roath?

Accepted Answer

DVSA test waiting times in Roath vary by season and demand. Typically 8–14 weeks, though this can be longer in busy periods. Book as early as possible — you can book up to 24 weeks in advance. Cancellation slots also appear regularly and can be booked at short notice.

Question 7

Can I take my driving test in my instructor's car in Roath?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most learners take their practical test in their instructor's dual-control car in Roath. This is recommended as you will be familiar with the vehicle. You can also use your own car if it meets DVSA requirements (roadworthy, insured for the test, no warning lights showing).

Question 8

What happens if I fail my driving test in Roath?

Accepted Answer

If you fail your practical test in Roath, you can rebook after 10 working days. Your examiner will give you a test report showing every fault. Review this with your instructor, address the weak points, and consider a mock test before rebooking. Many learners pass on their second attempt.

Question 9

What documents do I need to bring to my driving test in Roath?

Accepted Answer

Bring your photocard provisional driving licence to the Roath test centre. If you have a paper licence, you must also bring your valid passport. You do not need to bring your theory test pass certificate on test day — the DVSA verifies this electronically.

Question 10

Should I take a mock driving test before my real test in Roath?

Accepted Answer

Yes — strongly recommended. A mock test in Roath uses the real test routes from your local DVSA test centre, runs for the full 40 minutes, and gives you detailed feedback on every fault. Learners who take a mock test have significantly higher pass rates. Book a mock test through Reliant 1–2 weeks before your real test.
